Tintype Portrait Sessions: Kerikeri Mission Station

  • Kerikeri Mission Station 246 Kerikeri Road Kerikeri, Northland Region, 0230 New Zealand (map)

Step back in time and have your portrait made using a photographic process dating back to the 1850s, in one of Aotearoa’s most historically significant settings.

Established in 1819, Kerikeri Mission Station is home to Kemp House and the Stone Store, landmarks that tell stories of early Māori and European encounters. It’s a fitting setting for wet plate photography, a beautiful, hands-on process that connects us with photography’s earliest days.

I’ll be bringing my mobile darkroom to the station to create one-of-a-kind portraits on 5×4-inch aluminium plates. Each portrait is made individually using the original wet plate collodion process, resulting in a unique photographic object to keep for generations.

Please feel free to bring along any traditional kākahu or taonga to include in your portrait. Whether it’s something deeply personal, an expression of cultural identity or a treasured family heirloom, these meaningful details can make your portrait even more special.

Sessions are limited to a maximum of two people.
